50mm – When taking photos at a food festival, do you need the food?

Deep Fried Mushrooms Empty Plate - Festivale - Launceston, Tasmania

The plate above held an assortment of deep fried mushrooms in an aioli – yum!

Using implication in your photos

You don’t always have to have the actual item to take a compelling photo. Mostly, when you’re taking photos of food, you will include the food. Here I’ve decided to take a photo of an empty plate to show that enjoying the food by eating it is just as important as the food itself.

The grease stains on the plate and the leftover aioli on the spork are a testament to the food that used to be on the plate. I think they add texture and realism versus a straight up photo of food like yesterday’s post.
